A condition in which the testes or ovaries produce too little sex hormone. Anabolic steroid-induced hypogonadism (ASIH) is the persistent suppression of the body's own testosterone production after stopping anabolic steroids.
Suppression during use is universal; hypogonadism is diagnosed when recovery fails to happen in the expected time after stopping. Symptoms include fatigue, low mood, low libido and loss of muscle. Diagnosis rests on morning testosterone, LH and FSH. Treatment options reviewed in the literature include SERMs, hCG and, in some cases, long-term testosterone replacement.
