A class of medicines, including clomiphene and tamoxifen, that block or activate estrogen receptors depending on the tissue. In the brain they block estrogen feedback, which raises LH and FSH and can restart the body's own testosterone production.
SERMs are the main class used in post-cycle therapy and in the treatment of anabolic steroid-induced hypogonadism, in both cases off-label. They act at the top of the HPG axis, unlike hCG, which acts directly on the testes. They are prescription medicines with their own side effects and are not the same as aromatase inhibitors, which lower estrogen rather than blocking its receptor.
