The window

From the compound clearing until your own production is back: two to four months for most, longer for some. This is when the split between keeping and losing is decided. Plan the period the way you planned the cycle: training programme, food, sleep, blood test dates.

The mistake that costs the most

Cutting straight after. People see water go, panic about “losing everything”, and diet to look lean. A deficit on top of low testosterone strips real muscle. Hold calories at maintenance, accept the softer look for a few weeks, and cut later with hormones back.

The mistake that costs the second most

Not confirming recovery. Rasmussen and colleagues found former users with lower testosterone and hypogonadal symptoms years after stopping. Living at half your baseline means training half as well and slowly losing what you built. One blood test tells you, and persistent suppression is treatable.

The upside

The nuclei stay. When you train again, with or without pharmacology, growth comes faster than the first time. What you keep is a head start, provided you keep lifting through the window.

How much do I lose after a cycle?

Water and glycogen quickly, several kilos in some cases. Then a slower loss of the muscle your natural hormone level cannot support. The share you keep depends on training, food, sleep and how well your hormones recover. Some keep most; those who stop training or diet hard keep little.

Is muscle memory real?

Should I cut after a cycle?

No. A calorie deficit with low testosterone is the worst combination for muscle. Maintain calories through recovery; cut once your hormones are confirmed back.

How should I train coming off?

Keep intensity: the same heavy compound lifts at the same loads as far as possible, with 20–30% fewer sets. Tension is the retention signal. Do not switch to light pump work.

How long is the risky window?
